He is met with suspicion and hostility, despite his assurances that rehab is working. As tensions start to subside, however, his presence back in town is noticed by his old associates Ben was written and directed by Peter Hedges and it's clear it was crafted for his son, who stars as the titular troubled young man.
Lucas Hedges has to work a tricky balancing act of appearing disturbed without relying on stereotypes or overacting. He succeeds and it's probably the best role he has done, outside of Manchester by the Sea.
Julia Roberts likewise underplays as his mother and the movie is more-or-less constructed around their conversations, arguments, and journeys around town.
What makes Ben is Back stand out is that it gives a convincing look at addiction and its consequences while avoiding saccharine melodrama.
The first two thirds serve as a realistic family piece, while the final act turns into a low-key crime drama, as Ben faces his creditors and his past.
I'd argue the lack of sentimental touch is what probably what kept the crowd that usually views holiday-themed Julia Roberts movies away from Ben is Back.
Its blunt honesty doomed the picture. A surprisingly good film and an excellent streaming choice. Joshua S Super Reviewer.
Jan 22, There are a thousand different statistics out there about the opioid crisis, but within each of those numbers touted about in the "Americans are now more likely to die from opioid overdoses than car crashes" headlines there are also that many individual stories-some of which no doubt share many a similarities-while others exist wholly in their own unique bubble.
Vance with whom she has two younger children. The dynamic of the somewhat blended family would stand on solid foundation were it not for Holly's oldest son who became addicted to pain killers at a young age which served as a segue into other drugs and dangerous circles.
From the outside, Ben is Back admittedly looks like your run-of-the-mill addiction drama that might pave over the ugly stuff in favor of telling an inspiring story of redemption, but the film is keen on not glossing over certain realities, but instead reinforces the fact that this could ultimately become anyone's reality-even someone who lives in a nice suburban house and participates in the Christmas pageant every year.
Surprisingly, this is a film that not only packs in the expected simultaneous beauty and heartbreak that comes with being a parent, but also poses to be something of an authentic thriller with real, raw tension.
It's an interestingly structured screenplay that approaches the audience with a simple premise and seemingly average family before unraveling the layers and the complications that come along with those layers-it's really quite impressively done in terms of character definition and development.
It doesn't hurt that Roberts is in top dramatic form here as a woman who must constantly walk the line between being this happy mother who is thrilled just to have her son back to that of a mother who is panicked and concerned about what that son might do next; it's as equally harrowing as it is unrelenting.
As the film is largely something of a two-hander though, and as someone who hasn't yet completely warmed up to the idea of Lucas Hedges, credible actor, the twenty-two year-old won me over with his ability to also go from having all the confidence and charisma in the world-enough to make his mother believe he's truly made massive improvements after a seventy-seven day stint in rehab, anyway-to that of being this fearful, apologetic little boy that regresses in front of his mother.
These pendulum swings in personalities are representative of the journeys each of these characters take and thus are representative of the journey we take in the film.
Ben may be back, but more importantly-so is Roberts-and I don't think young Hedges is going anywhere, anytime soon. Philip P Super Reviewer.
Dec 10, It helped that Julia Roberts, who had already signed onto the film, had also pushed hard for Lucas' participation. Luckily it all worked out as the film features a blazing chemistry between these two actors at the top of their games.
Lucas plays Ben Burns, who surprises his family by taking an early leave from rehab and appearing at their doorstep at Christmas time.
Vance show much more trepidation. Hedges economically doles out pieces of their history, enough to get the idea that Ben has a ruinous past and hasn't earned back their trust.
Even Holly hides away the prescription medications in her bathroom cabinet. The first act of the film plays with the push-pull of the relationships, offering moments of levity which turn on a dime into heightened emotions.
Around the halfway mark, however, the film turns into a ticking clock thriller of sorts, with the Burns' home ransacked and their family dog missing.
During the 24 hours that may change their lives forever, Holly must do everything in her power to avoid the family's downfall.
So, Lucas Hedges is having quite a year. A bully in Mid 90s, a gay teen who must endure conversion therapy in Boy Erased.
And now in Ben is Back he is a recovering addict whose opioid addiction has caused major problems between him and his family. Directed by Peter Hedges, who also happens to be Lucas' father, this is a simple but effective film that deals with a crisis that many parents have to face.
This one quietly arrived in theaters but its one to watch. The film is about Ben, who recently returns home having been sober for 77 days. His mom wants to give him the benefit of the doubt although she is weary about whether he is using or not.
Ben soon realizes that his old ways catch up to him and it causes a danger to his family. Ben tries to wrong the rights and fight off the temptation of the past, and his mom played by Julia Roberts strives to remain at his side to make sure that she doesn't lose her son.
I like the recent waves of films that are covering drug addiction. Working in that counseling field I see it daily and see what a problem it is.
You can never be clear of your demons and relapse is a normality. I think Lucas Hedges has one of his strongest performances yet, not that that's a surprise because he's good in everything.
Best Julia Roberts performance in a while as well, at least for me. Its a simple plot and takes place over the course of a day or so but its a deep story that engulfs you from the opening scene.
I don't know if this is going to get award season love but I'd like for it to get nominated for its original screenplay and some acting plaudits.
Its easily identifiable, and the characters are strong and driven, a testament to the actors who commit to the performances. Wouldn't have minded this thing being minutes longer because not a minute is wasted here.

Added to Watchlist. From metacritic. Stars of the s, Then and Now. Upcoming Movies Guide: November and Beyond. Holly follows him in the car and they end up driving around trying to find the dog together.
They first visit one of Ben's former high school teachers. Holly is shocked to learn he used to provide her son with drugs in exchange for sexual favors.
Next they go to Maggie's father's apartment. Seeing him sleeping and no dog in sight they retreat to their car but he wakes and angrily smashes the car window screaming for Ben to leave.
While eating at a diner Ben tells Holly he got Maggie hooked on drugs and is responsible for her death. He says that he lied to her telling her that the drugs were the best thing ever.
Holly explains at the time he believed this to be the truth, so it was not a lie. Ben's childhood friend Spencer the guy from the mall shows up and after a physical confrontation, confirms Ben's fear: Clayton, a drug dealer he used to work for, is the one who took the dog.
Ben tries to get his mom to go home, telling her this will be dangerous and she should let him handle it.
He also says he's a liar and not worth all the trouble but Holly refuses to leave him. Ben is able to trick Holly at a gas station convenience store, leaving her stranded there while he goes to meet Clayton.
Ben tries to buy his dog back but Clayton says Ben must do one more job for him - handling a drug run. Meanwhile, Holly goes to Maggie's mom for help.
Maggie's mom gives her a med kit for reviving a person who has suffered an overdose and the keys to her car to go find Ben.
Holly tracks down Spencer, and gives him the drugs she confiscated from Ben earlier, in exchange for him telling her where Ben might be.
Holly also goes to a drive-through pharmacy and tries to fill an old prescription, presumably for anti-overdose medication.
The pharmacist refuses to fill the prescription, because the store does not want to encourage bad behavior. Ben completes the mission and gets his dog back, but Clayton also gives him some drugs as a thank you.
Ben goes to the same drive-through pharmacy, ironically receiving a syringe from the same person who previously denied Holly anti-overdose medication on the grounds of not wanting to encourage bad behavior.
Ben drives out to an abandoned barn and parks on the side of the road. He leaves Ponce in the car with a note asking whoever finds it to call Holly.
After wandering around all night, searching unsuccessfully for Ben, Holly finally goes to a police station.
While screaming for someone to find and arrest her son, she gets a call from a guy who has found Ponce, and drives out to retrieve him. She follows Ponce down a nearby path that leads to an old barn where she finds Ben unconscious, having taken the drugs from Clayton.
Holly uses the Naloxone kit from Maggie's mom and performs mouth-to-mouth on him, and finally is able to revive him as the movie cuts to ending credits.
Vance joining the cast as Ben's stepfather. The website's critics consensus reads, "Refreshingly understated, Ben Is Back subverts family drama stereotypes - and provides a forum for terrific performances from Lucas Hedges and Julia Roberts.
